This is kind of awesome. I've been getting so angry reading the letters to the editor page lately. There are so many Catholics that are so myopic.
Abortion is a much easier issue to shout about than poverty, and it's morally much easier to be opposed to abortion than to be opposed to the death penalty.
These people would have others think that Catholicism is based only upon anti-abortion principles. Is that a great wrong in the world, yes! But are there many other great wrongs in the world? Of course! Why do these people ignore that and anoint anyone who is anti-abortion as "standing by Catholic principles"?
grr.....
The fact of the matter is that most Catholics, at least in the U.S., advocate one thing or another the Church opposes, and regardless, we're all sinners. For one political group to claim they have a monopoly on Catholic teaching when it's readily apparent that they don't is offensive in the extreme.
The thing that annoys me the most about this is that these people claim to speak for all Catholics, as if if I don't agree with them then I'm not a "real" Catholic. And they're so public about it all that they give us a bad name.
