Thunder!
I'm glad I stayed up late... that was the first thunderstorm I'd experienced all year. It passed by fairly distant, but I could hear thunder and we got about 10 minutes of rain.

My first year back here, we had a thunderstorm while I was teaching in the bungalows. The girls were freaking out, screaming a little (similar to when there's a bug in the room.) My neighbor from New Jersey said, "you'd think they'd never heard thunder before!" I had to explain to her that they probably hadn't heard it in years.
I remember once, when I was little, Mom and Dad woke me up so that I could see a lightning storm.
