Guess who else has been lying to you.

That's right, it's Cardinal Roger Mahony. Not really surprising at this point, but disappointing nonetheless. You know, it would have been great if when the molesting priests scandal had broken, the Church leadership had made an effort to be totally honest with us and tried to re-establish our trust that way. But man, they really didn't do that at all. It's sad.

Let's hope Mahoney's penance involves repeated study of the ten commandments as well as remembering the part of the Act of Contrition that goes "..and failing to do good..."

Really slimy is the statement about how he was supposedly just avoiding discussion in public about stuff they were court-ordered not to talk about. Normal people say "the court has asked us not to discuss this," not "Oh, there's nothing incriminating there..."

I actually voted for "Cardinal Mahony testifies" in DELIVER US FROM EVIL for Skandies Best Scene. Sorry, Adambud, I know he's your bishop and stuff. But he's a snake and his 75th birthday on Feb. 27, 2011, can't come soon enough.

One further example: he fought releasing records on scandal-suspect priests for years, all the way to the Supreme Court, claiming they were covered by the confessional seal. But then, as another Catholic blogger pointed out:

If Cardinal Roger Mahony hands those files over he will be exposed as cynical and manipulative, because if he really thought those files should be protected under the seal he would go to jail before violating that seal. Canon law requires no less. But if he turns them over, and it looks like he will, then we will see that Mahony simply used the seal of the confessional as a legal tactic to cover his butt.
